Who is Dervla Trainor?

What gives Dervla the authority to teach this masterclass? 

Here’s a quick overview of her experience:

Before diving into the world of voiceover, she built up years of experience in sales, pricing, and negotiating through a variety of roles, like:

  • Working as a commercial real estate agent.
  • Negotiating deals for live shows and tours while working at a music booking agency, representing artists big and small.
  • Earning a degree in psychology, which gave her a passion for analyzing human behavior—something that’s been a huge help in how she approaches quoting and negotiating.
  • Freelancing as a producer and production manager for TV and commercials, which gave her a behind-the-scenes perspective on how budgets and projects come together.
  • Even her part-time jobs while in school were at restaurants and bars, where upsell incentives taught her a lot about pricing and persuasion.

As for her experience in the voiceover industry:

  • She’s been a freelance, non-union voice actor for almost 11 years now, and most of her work comes directly from clients she’s connected with herself.
  • She founded and co-owned V.O. North, Canada’s biggest voiceover conference, which gave her an inside look at how the industry works and allowed her to form lasting relationships with top professionals.
  • She runs the VO Kickstart Program, which helps aspiring voice actors launch their businesses with confidence.
  • She also hosts the Voiceover Speaker Series, a free, bi-annual online event where she interviews industry experts who share valuable advice to help voice actors at all experience levels grow more in their careers.
  • She is deeply passionate about educating the voiceover community and advocates for fair, livable incomes. She emphasizes the importance of all voice actors maintaining industry-standard rates and educating clients to ensure the industry remains sustainable—not just creatively, but financially as well!
